Shelter: Crafting a Safe Home Opening Weekend Celebration

Enjoy a Saturday full of thoughtful art, entertainment, and community building as we celebrate the opening of Shelter: Crafting a Safe Home.

  • 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Pop-Up Shop by Artist Daniel See. This special Pop-Up shop will feature mugs that incorporated the hand impression of Northside Common Ministries Pleasant Valley Shelter residents. 
  • 12:00 - 2:00 PM Dialogue with the Artists. Shelter's exhibiting artist will hold an informal artist talk to share their thoughts on their artwork and the issue explored through Shelter.

This event is open to the public with a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Cement Technique for Jewelry

In the "Cement Technique for Jewelry" workshop taught by Demitra Thomloudis, students will learn to create hollow, lightweight objects using cement and apply these techniques within the format of jewelry. Silicone mold making, resin, and acrylic surface techniques will also be covered. Metalworking skills are encouraged but not required.

Saturday Information Session

Representatives from Shelter's community partners will present in the the gallery on the first Saturday of every month throughout the duration of Shelter as a resource for the visitors.

This Saturday, Allegheny Link and University of Pittsburgh Studio Class focused on mixed-use, co-living housing project for refugees and immigrants will be in the gallery from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Mindful Closing Celebration

Mindful Closing Celebration

Join us on Saturday, March 12 as we bid farewell to Mindful” Exploring Mental Health Through Art. Temporary semicolon tattoos (a symbol embraced by those affected by mental illness) will be offered in the gallery from 11am - 1pm, and our Mindful writing workshop participants will be on hand to share their writing at 1pm. The unwrapping of Rose Clancy’s installation Dangerous Objects Made Safe at 2pm will reveal beautiful rust patterns stained on white cotton, proves that beauty can be found in the most unlikely places. While the impacts of Mindful will be remembered for years to come, this event is one-day only -- don’t miss it!

NEW!  Mindful has been extended through March 26, 2016!  The closing celebration will still take place on March 12.

Lecture: Pediatric Anxiety Disorders, Phenomenology and Treatment

Dr. Birmaher serves as the Director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Program and Co-Director of Child and Adolescent Bipolar Services at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC. He is a widely recognized expert in pharmacological and biological studies of children and adolescents with mood and anxiety disorders. He has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today and was featured on the PBS Frontline special “The Medicated Child.” Dr. Birmaher has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and also recently published a book for parents and clinicians entitled “New Hope for Children and Teens with Bipolar Disorder”.

This special lecture is being presented in tandem with the Society for Contemporary Craft's exhibition Mindful: Exploring Mental Health Through Art.

Presented in the UPMC Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic Auditorium.

Explore Mindful: Writing as a Healing Art

With Laurie McMillan & Sheila Kelly - Write to Mindful’s exhibition artworks as you heal body, mind and spirit. You will use in-class writing prompts to challenge received beliefs, allow the hurt body to speak, and articulate fears and desires. With the help of guided meditations and selected readings, students will write, share and relate to the stories of others in a nurturing atmosphere which feels non-judgmental and fun. There will be an opportunity to read your written work at the closing of Mindful. Tuition for this workshop is $80. It meets for 4 Saturdays: February 20 & 27 March 5 & 12 from 10 am—12 pm.  Register here.

Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures is proud to present a Literary Evening with author Andrew Solomon on Monday, December 7th.  Solomon’s newest book, Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity, shares stories of families coping with deafness, autism, schizophrenia, with children who are criminals, gay, and transgender.
